With a massive selection of over 6300 servers to choose from in over 110 locations, CyberGhost has one of the most impressive networks for a VPN.

Visit CyberGhost

While the VPNs we’ve featured have been graded for their all-round performance, you may want a VPN for a specific reason. Some VPNs are better suited for online streaming, playing video games, and even torrenting thanks to specialist P2P servers that are optimized for file sharing. If you already know what you want your VPN for, you can browse our top VPNs for specific categories below.

How to choose a VPN?

Every VPN is different and with so many to choose from, it’s important to know what features separate a good VPN from a bad VPN.

As the primary purpose of a VPN is to anonymize your internet traffic and ultimately make your connection more secure, security features should be at the top of your list. 256-bit military-grade encryption should be expected and you should always prioritize VPNs offering additional security features such as a killswitch, advertising and malware blocking, DNS leak protection, IPv6 leak protection, and double VPN protection.

If your VPN ends up significantly slowing down your connection, what’s the point in using it? Download speeds should also be a top priority and if you’re looking to access the hottest discounts on PlayStation Network or watch the latest Netflix shows, your VPN should have a wide variety of top quality server locations. Your VPN shouldn’t be a pain to use either; it should be easy to set up and run smoothly enough that you won’t even realize you’re connected to it.

That’s a lot to consider already, and that’s without mentioning price, reliability, customer support, and the importance of VPNs having a clear no-logging policy. Thankfully, you don’t have to waste your time looking into every VPN that’s out there yourself. Our VPN experts have done it for you.

What is the Very Best VPN Service?

Despite the similarities between many of the top VPNs, ExpressVPN is our top choice for offering users the fastest possible speeds, complemented with a reliable service, an excellent selection of server locations, and an incredibly friendly user interface.

Across all of our tests, ExpressVPN came out on top for connection speeds and for its ability to bypass geoblocks used by Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer. No matter where in the world you’re trying to connect from, ExpressVPN’s robust security features ensure you’ll always stay well protected.

Ultimately, this winning combination of privacy, usability, and accessibility means ExpressVPN is the very best VPN out there. But don’t just take our word for it; there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee. That’s plenty of time to trial its excellent features before you commit to making a decision.

The 10 Best VPNs : Full Overview

Written By: Adam Dagan

1.ExpressVPN Review

If you want to improve your online security and bypass geoblocks without compromising the speed of your connection, ExpressVPN is the best VPN out there. It’s easy to set up and comes pre-installed on the vast majority of VPN-compatible routers. In short, it couldn’t be any easier to use, and you can even download an extension to use on desktop browsers and a mobile app for cell phones.

Unrivaled security features and ultra-fast download speeds.

All the security essentials are there too. ExpressVPN has a strict no-logging policy which means it doesn’t store any of your user information. For added security, you can even pay for your subscription using a burner email address, and by paying with bitcoin. Additional security features include split-tunneling support, zero-knowledge DNS, a kill switch, and Trusted Server Technology using RAM, which means your information can’t be stored, guaranteeing complete anonymity.

Speed

Across all of our tests, ExpressVPN delivered the fastest connection speeds but most importantly, these speeds were always consistent. This level of consistency is echoed across its server locations too, meaning you won’t have to worry about your connection dropping out when you’re connecting to servers in other countries to bypass geoblocks. And when it comes to bypassing geoblocks, we didn’t encounter a single streaming service that we weren’t able to use. We were even able to connect to websites that typically don’t allow VPNs.

Connection Ping Download Speed Upload Speed
Manual connect UK server 8 ms 58.56 Mbps 12.25 Mbps
Manual connect UK server 10 ms 54.52 Mbps 11.85 Mbps
Manual connect UK server 12 ms 53.22 Mbps 11.12 Mbps

Quick connect JP server 180 ms 38.42 Mbps 6.01 Mbps
Manual connect UK server 291 ms 35.11 Mbps 6.09 Mbps

While ExpressVPN is one of the easiest VPNs to set up and use, if you do ever need to contact customer service, there’s 24/7 live chat support. We were never waiting any longer than five minutes to speak to someone, even during peak times.

Not good for...

If you’re looking for a cheap VPN, you might want to look elsewhere. ExpressVPN offers the best service but at a price that’s double that of most other VPNs.

Bottom Line

With over 3000 private servers located in over 90 countries, all of which offer phenomenal connection speeds, you’ll struggle to find a faster and more reliable VPN than ExpressVPN. It’s an excellent choice for both VPN newbies and experienced tech-heads thanks to its user-friendly interface, native app support, and compatibility with modern routers. Better still, there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee, which is plenty of time to decide whether or not it’s for you.

2.NordVPN

While NordVPN didn’t quite manage to make our number one spot, it’s an excellent VPN with a long list of security features and server locations that provide phenomenal value. With a choice of 5000 private servers to connect to, our experts were able to easily access Netflix and Amazon Prime Video libraries from India, South Africa, and Japan. We also tested the VPN through PlayStation 4 and were able to access a variety of PlayStation Network stores, allowing us to take advantage of the latest offers. In total, NordVPN can unblock over 400 different services.

An excellent all-round VPN you can always rely on

For those of you concerned about your online security, NordVPN has you covered with a CyberSec suite, providing adblocking and malware protection. You can change your IP address twice with double VPN protection and a strict no-logging policy guarantees NordVPN doesn’t track, collect, or share your personal information. For added anonymity, you can pay for your subscription using Bitcoin.

Speed

One of the best things about NordVPN is P2P support. There are hundreds of P2P servers that have been optimized for file sharing, and you’ll be able to share files anonymously and quickly thanks to excellent download and upload speeds. We put NordVPN to the test from a variety of different locations using its instant connect feature, recording an average speed of around 50Mbps.

Connection Ping Download Speed Upload Speed
Manual connect UK server 11 ms 56.23 Mbps 11.71 Mbps

Manual connect UK server 434 ms 37.97 Mbps 5.84 Mbps
Not good for...

With no three month and six-month plans available, NordVPN pushes users towards annual subscriptions.

Bottom Line

NordVPN offers all the benefits of a world-class VPN at a price that you can’t argue with. Speeds are ultra-fast and consistent, even when we were connected to servers at the other end of the world. There wasn’t a single entertainment service that we weren’t able to access thanks to NordVPN’s excellent geo-filtering. Plus, with optimized servers for P2Pfile-sharing, NordVPN is an amazing all-rounder.

3.RUSVPN

RusVPN is incredibly easy to install and its compatibility with a wide variety of platforms makes it easy to use, too. It’s a solid all-rounder that covers off all of the VPN basics, making it a great choice for anyone who’s looking for an easy way to enhance their online security. Once you’re connected, you’ll benefit from DNS and IP leak protection, dedicated and high-speed servers, and anonymous browsing with military-grade encryption. Plus, there’s the added bonus of a strict no-logging policy.

Speed

Unfortunately, the speeds on offer don’t match what you’d get from a VPN like NordVPN or ExpressVPN and while we could easily connect to Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and HBO, we didn’t have any luck with Netflix, no matter how many servers we tried connecting to (we tried 100 servers in total and gave up after reading other people have encountered the same issue). While there are only 338 servers to choose from, they cover over 40 countries in total, which is more than enough to bypass most geoblocks and reach decent speeds.

Connection Ping Download Speed Upload Speed
Manual connect UK server 10 ms 54.45 Mbps 11.95 Mbps
Manual connect UK server 13 ms 49.10 Mbps 10.21 Mbps

Manual connect UK server 205 ms 36.59 Mbps 8.17 Mbps
Not good for...

If you want to access the latest films and TV shows from other countries on Netflix, you won’t have much luck here.

Bottom Line

While RusVPN doesn’t deliver the same quality of connection and speeds from some of the top VPN providers, its user-friendly interface makes it the perfect companion for anyone that’s looking for a cheap way to improve their online security. And while it may not be able to bypass Netflix’s geoblock, you’ll still be able to use it to change your location in Amazon Prime Video and Hulu.

4.UltraVPN

It takes a lot to make such an impact within such a short space of time. Sure, 100 servers isn’t great compared to some of the industry’s big boys, but with an ever growing user base and to see such development in quite the brief timespan, we’d suggest watching this space. The typical platforms are covered like MacOS, Windows, and both the mobile options, and anyone keen to try this provider out will benefit from unlimited bandwidth. As we all know as VPN users, this isn’t something ISPs are willing to dole out; if they do, expect sporadic throttling right when you need your connection most.

A massive selection of servers makes bypassing geoblocks a breeze

Alongside military-grade encryption, UltraVPN users also benefit from a solid firewall and reliable protection against nefarious activities like malware and phishing. Through in-built protection, you’ll be kept clear of any untoward issues as well as maintain your anonymity and privacy, meaning ISPs, governments, and hackers can’t penetrate your personal data.

Not good for...

UltraVPN is based in the US which, as we all know, isn’t the best place for a provider to fight against data retention and copyright laws. As a result, it does store some logs, so beware.

Bottom Line

For a VPN that’s just started out, you can see that UltraVPN is already making moves and attracting a lot of attention. It still has a long way to go, though, in order to be a VPN of choice and compete with some of the titans that are out there. That means boosting its server count, optimizing them for activities like torrenting and streaming, and making changes to its logging policy.

5.CyberGhost

With a massive selection of over 6300 servers to choose from in over 110 locations, CyberGhost has one of the most impressive networks for a VPN. This means CyberGhost is fully compatible with pretty much every streaming platform out there – we didn’t find a single website that we couldn’t connect to using CyberGhost and we were able to access Netflix from servers in Australia, Finland, France, Spain, Switzerland, and Japan, with many of these servers offering P2P support too. CyberGhost even offers special No Spy servers that integrate super high premium hardware with a dedicated uplink to guarantee fast and reliable performance.

An award-winning VPN with unlimited device support

There’s an impressive list of high-quality security features that promise to keep you safe while you’re connected. CyberGhost users benefit from military-grade encryption, leak-proof apps, a kill switch, double VPN protection, and a clear no-logging policy that we’ve fully verified by diving deep into its privacy policy. Your information isn’t stored and will therefore never be shared with any third parties.

Speed

With so many servers to choose from, we wanted to make sure they delivered on the ultra-fast speeds that CyberGhost promises its users. We weren’t disappointed. While it isn’t in the same league as ExpressVPN or NordVPN for download speeds, it isn’t far off. CyberGhost offers very impressive download speeds, even in the United Kingdom when we connected our Mac to use BBC iPlayer. Speeds were fast enough to support streaming in full HD, although we did notice a drop in speed when we connected the VPN through our Xbox One to use Netflix.

Connection Ping Download Speed Upload Speed
Manual connect UK server 45 ms 79 Mbps 67 Mbps
Manual connect UK server 34 ms 67 Mbps 55.99 Mbps
Not good for...

While CyberGhost is amazing for bypassing geoblocks, you won’t be able to use the VPN in China.

Bottom Line

If your main reason for using a VPN is to stream the latest films and TV shows or access digital gaming discounts that aren’t available in your country, CyberGhost is probably the best VPN you could choose, thanks to a massive selection of over 6300 servers. All of these servers delivered consistent speeds when we tested them and security features such as a kill switch and leak-proof apps promise to keep your identity a secret.

6.Private Internet Access

PIA, as it’s commonly known, has been around more than 11 years now and has been there since the dawn of the acknowledgment of absolute VPN necessity. What’s more, as the horizon of cybersecurity has adapted to new threats and government legislation over the last decade, so has the software on offer here. 23,000 worldwide servers might be more than you could ever make your way through, but this quantity serves as reassurance that protection and anonymity are never far away. Plus, the option to vacate congested servers is clearly always an option. It’s available on every commonly used device and anyone unsure of the performance provided can trial it out with the invaluable 30-day money-back guarantee.

The fastest VPN in the world is our #1 best-rated VPN for 2020 for its outstanding security and consistent speed and reliability

There are no shortcomings on security with PIA, either. You’ll get what all savvy VPN users have come to expect: that means 256-bit AES encryption, an automatic kill switch, flexible choice when it comes to VPN protocols, and accessibility on virtually every device. Sure, its website and interface might be somewhat streamlined, but you’ll get what you pay for.

Speed

Not good for...

The simplicity of the interface’s design is likely too basic for some, which writes off customization options many users crave. People that prefer to take full control of their VPN could benefit from seeing what else is out there.

Bottom Line

The US-based PIA has a mammoth selection of servers spread across almost 80 different countries. Despite its link to the Five-Eyes jurisdiction, our experiences taught us that logging isn’t an issue you need to worry about. Plus, 23,000 servers – anonymity has never been so easy, wherever you’re based.

7.Hotspot Shield

Since it first started in 2018, *has been causing waves in the VPN scene thanks to some exclusive security features that offer users the highest levels of online protection. In addition to military-grade encryption, double VPN protection, split tunneling, and a clear no-logging policy, *offers a unique security suite called CleanWeb that automatically blocks ads and adware, so you won’t have to worry about running anti-virus software that eats up your CPU. Let *bite chunks out of any malware threats instead.

The fastest VPN in the world is our #1 best-rated VPN for 2020 for its outstanding security and consistent speed and reliability

If your primary purpose for using a VPN is to remain anonymous online, *has a lot to keep you happy. Camouflage mode makes sure that even your ISP can’t see what you’re up to, so you’ll never have to worry about your speeds being throttled during peak times. There’s also a cool feature called MultiHop that connects you via multiple countries at once to completely mask any potential online footprints. There’s no specialist P2P support on offer but that’s because there doesn’t have to be – all of *’s 1700 servers support file sharing.

*  is simple to set up and even simpler to use. It’s compatible with a long list of routers and there are native apps for everything from desktops and laptops to smart TVs, internet browsers, cellphones, and tablets. While * was able to bypass all of the geoblocks we encountered, we did notice that certain websites such as Hulu and BBC iPlayer weren’t accessible from mobile devices. We ran an extensive speed check at the most popular locations and were impressed by the results.

Bottom Line

VPN is a quick and easy VPN that delivers everything you’d want from a VPN. 700 servers isn’t the largest selection out there, but they all offer quality speeds and a reliable connection. From wide platform support to third-party audits that deliver on VPN’s promise of anonymity, this is a VPN you can trust with your personal information and keeping you safe online.

8.HMA VPN

HMA VPN was one of the first VPN providers in the industry way back in 2005. It now serves more than 400 million people around the world, one of the largest global market shares, and it has garnered a reputation as one of the most trustworthy VPN providers in the market, scoring high user approval across a number of criteria:

The fastest VPN in the world is our #1 best-rated VPN for 2020 for its outstanding security and consistent speed and reliability

Bottom Line

There are a lot of positives to recommend HMA VPN service, the easy to use app, great list of features, great speeds, and reasonable pricing, but it can’t be overlooked that the company is *not* the best when it comes to its privacy and security features. If you are just looking to access video streaming websites from abroad, this VPN service could be sufficient. If, however, you are after top online security, privacy, and anonymity, you might want to look elsewhere.

9.IPVanish VPN

IPVanish owns and manages all of the servers you can connect to, which means we were able to experience ultra-fast download speeds that didn’t fall too short of our usual speeds when we weren’t connected to the VPN. Native apps for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS make IPVanish easy to use once it’s installed. A robust set of security features, including 256-bit AES encryption, unmetered connections, and a wide variety of protocols, mean you’ll never have to worry about your online privacy, especially as IPVanish operates with a strict no-logging policy.

A bonus to your IPVanish subscription is SugarSync secure cloud storage. This provides secure file management and encrypted data backup for computers, tablets, and even mobile devices. When our experts tested IPVanish, we tried accessing Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer from a variety of different locations. When we manually connected, we did encounter a couple of hiccups; but using the instant connection feature instantly connected us to servers that worked in specific countries. Speeds were consistent and we didn’t experience any buffering or lag.

While there’s a great selection of apps available, we did encounter some minor usability issues with the mobile apps.

Bottom Line

With the addition of SugarSync cloud storage alongside the ability to connect up to ten devices simultaneously, IPVanish offers excellent value for money. We didn’t encounter any websites that we couldn’t access through geo-filtering and overall, download speeds were consistent and fairly impressive.

10.Vypr VPN

VyprVPN recently upgraded its global servers to give users a faster and more reliable connection so of course, we had to put it to the test! We started by routing our connection through countries such as Australia, Russia, Portugal and Brazil to see if we could bypass the geoblocks used by Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. We encountered no problems at all and only noticed a slight reduction in our connection speed, although we did spot slight inconsistencies after running several tests.

The fastest VPN in the world is our #1 best-rated VPN for 2020 for its outstanding security and consistent speed and reliability

Vypr is one of the few VPNs that is actually audited by third-party security professionals to ensure its strict no-logging policy is maintained. Your information will never be recorded or shared with any third parties. If you live in a country such as India or China where VPN access is normally blocked, VyprVPN’s unique Chameleon protocol guarantees a truly open and uncensored internet connection when used through your router or Mac, Windows, and Android devices.

VPN additional FAQ

What is a no-logging policy?

When you’re connected to the internet, your ISP can usually see what time you connected to the internet, what websites you visited, and how long you stayed on those sites for. VPNs with a clear no-logging policy don’t log any information that could be used to identify their users. One of the main reasons people use a VPN is for online anonymity, so you should always prioritize VPNs with a no-logging policy.

Who needs a VPN?

The set-up instructions for each VPN will be different, but most VPNs can be easily installed on your router or accessed through native desktop or mobile apps. Some routers even come pre-installed with VPNs.

How do I set-up my VPN?

The set-up instructions for each VPN will be different, but most VPNs can be easily installed on your router or accessed through native desktop or mobile apps. Some routers even come pre-installed with VPNs.

Am I 100% Anonymous With a VPN?

While using a VPN is one of the most effective ways you can improve your online security, there’s nothing that can ever promise 100% anonymity. However, if you use a burner email and pay for your VPN subscription using cryptocurrency, you can minimize the risk of your identity ever being revealed.

Who Needs a VPN?

With remote working on the rise, it’s never been more important to ensure your internet connection is safe and secure. If you’re transferring important work files or connecting to private folders through your ISP, using a VPN will encrypt the information you’re transferring, protecting valuable information in the unfortunate event that your connection is ever compromised. If you ever need to connect your devices to a public Wi-Fi network, we’d never advise doing this without the protection of a VPN. Unsecured networks are responsible for the vast majority of cyber attacks, but you can protect yourself against many of the most common attacks by encrypting your information using a VPN.

While VPNs are typically used to improve online security, they’re also commonly used to bypass geoblocks and to access websites and content that aren’t available in your own country. You can use a VPN to connect to remote servers located all over the world, allowing you to watch the latest films and TV shows from foreign countries. In addition, you can also connect your gaming console to a VPN and access the gaming discounts and promotions that you wouldn’t be able to access otherwise.

In countries with strict internet censorship such as India and Hong Kong, VPNs have become a vital tool for democracy and internet freedom. China’s Great Firewall bans many of the most popular websites in the world, but citizens using a powerful and reliable VPN can bypass many of these restrictions to access uncensored news.

What is a Mobile VPN?

A mobile VPN is a downloadable VPN app that offers many, if not all of the same benefits as a VPN for your cell phone or mobile device. If you’re connecting your mobile devices to an unsecured network, you should always make sure that they’re protected through an encrypted tunnel using your VPN. Using the internet on your cell phone or tablet isn’t as secure as using it on a desktop computer that’s protected with antivirus software or the robust security features of a Mac.

Thankfully, many of the best VPNs, including nearly all of those that we’ve included in the best VPNs for 2020, include apps for mobile devices. These are easy to install and even easier to use, many of which have slick user interfaces that instantly connect your devices through an encrypted tunnel to anonymize your web traffic and protect your personal information.

Using a VPN with Windows 10, Chrome and Linux

Not all VPNs offer the same level of compatibility with Windows 10, Chrome, and Linux platforms. Depending on the VPN you’ve chosen, you may be required to take additional steps to install it on certain devices – if your VPN includes specific support in the first place. While many of the larger VPNs such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost work on all platforms, smaller VPNs aren’t as compatible with Linux.

The easiest way to use a VPN with Windows 10, Chrome or Linux is through downloading the native apps offered by all quality VPNs. These can be installed directly onto your desktop but as all platforms aren’t compatible, we would strongly advise that you check with your VPN provider for specific instructions and compatibility listings.

What is a Remote Access VPN?

A remote-access VPN allows remote office workers to log into their company’s network securely. This means remote workers can access all of the same resources remotely as if they were plugged directly into their work’s corporate network in their office. With remote working on the rise due to the ongoing impact of coronavirus, remote-access VPNs have become an important tool for large firms managing hundreds of remote workers in different locations.

In order to establish a connection, remote access VPNs require a network access server (NAS), also known as a media gateway or a remote access server (RAS). This is usually a dedicated server that requires users to provide valid credentials to sign in and connect their device to the remote access VPN. This is usually done via a unique authentication service or a separate authentication network running on the server.

In order to facilitate this connection, the employee will need client software that can establish and maintain a connection to the VPN. Most operating systems have this built-in but some VPNs might require workers to install a specific application. This software is used to set up the connection to the NAS and manage the encryption, helping to keep everyone’s information safe.

What is a Site-to-Site VPN?

A site-to-site VPN allows offices in multiple locations to establish secure connections with each other over an encrypted network. Site-to-site VPNs are commonly used by large corporations with multiple sites located all over the world, ensuring that any information transferred is fully protected.

There are two types of site-to-site VPNs: Intranet-based and extranet-based. Intranet-based site-to-site VPNs are used if a company has one or more remote locations that they wish to join together in a single private network. They do this by creating an internet VPN to connect each separate Local Area Network (LAN) to a single Wide Area Network (WAN).

Extra-net based site-to-site VPNs are used when a company has a close relationship with another company such as a partner or supplier. It can build an extranet VPN that connects those companies’ LANs, allowing them to work together in a secure network environment. Ultimately, site-to-site VPNs eliminate the need for individual computers to run their own VPN software.

Free vs Paid VPN

There are lots of VPN providers offering their services for free, and while the benefits of a free VPN might be tempting, you can end up exposing yourself and your devices to a lot of potential risks.

We’d always strongly advise people to choose paid-for VPNs over free VPN subscriptions. Even though there are lots of legitimate free VPNs that can improve your online security, it’s important to be aware of the dangers that arise from using a free VPN.

As they’re offering their services for free, free VPNs need to find another way to make money to ensure they can deliver the service they’re promising. Data, as everyone knows, is big business, and nine times out of ten, free VPNs make their money by selling your information to third parties. We’ve trialed free VPNs in the past using burner emails and have found our inboxes suddenly bombarded with unsolicited junk mail.

In addition to unwanted marketing materials, there are lots of websites claiming to offer VPN services for free that are nothing more than a scam. Many of these websites will bombard you with advertisements or even worse, infect your devices with malware. Quality fluctuates massively between free VPNs. Hiring private servers isn’t cheap, so many free VPNs share their servers with other websites. This means that while you might be able to bypass geoblocks, you won’t be able to stream your favorite films or TV shows without serious speed reductions that ultimately cause lag.

Finding a quality VPN that delivers everything that you need it to doesn’t have to break the bank. Some VPNs guarantee to improve your online security and let you access hundreds of server locations from as little as two dollars per month. Why risk your personal information being exposed to criminals when you could subscribe to a fully verified and trusted VPN for less than the cost of a cup of coffee every month?

Are VPNs Legal?

Using a VPN is perfectly legal in most countries. One of the main reasons VPNs were created was to improve security for big businesses and corporations with employees that work remotely. Unfortunately, there are certain countries with strict censorship of the internet that don’t allow the use of VPNs. This includes North Korea, Iraq, India, and China.

While VPNs are legal in most countries, it’s not acceptable to use a VPN to conduct illegal activities. If you use a VPN to commit an illegal act, such as downloading copyrighted information or hacking other computers, you’re still in violation of the law. It’s important to read the terms of service before you sign up for a VPN subscription to understand what is and what isn’t allowed, and what rights your VPN provider has to abide with any requests that are made by law enforcement officials.

Can You Trust Your VPN Service?

As many people use a VPN to anonymize their web traffic, trust is one of the most important factors when you’re choosing a VPN client. VPNs make a lot of bold claims in an attempt to gain new users, but how can you fully trust your VPN service?

Thankfully, there’s an easy way to tell whether or not you can trust your VPN. The most important factor to look out for is if your VPN operates with a clear no-logging policy. The very best VPNs will have a clear privacy policy that outlines how they process and store user information. The best VPNs operate with a clear no-logging policy that means they don’t store any personal information that could be used to identify you.

Your VPN should also be located outside of the jurisdiction of the five-eyes, nine-eyes, and 14-eyes intelligence groups. VPNs that are located in countries that are part of these groups have to abide by requests made by law enforcement officials and are legally required to supply information on their users when it’s deemed ‘necessary’.

Always make sure you’ve checked where your VPN is located and you’ve read their privacy policy before making your choice.

What Are the Limitations of VPN Services?

Using a VPN is one of the most effective ways of improving your online security and accessing content that isn’t available in your own country, but there are certain limitations to using a VPN that all users should be aware of.

The most important point is that no service in the world can 100% guarantee your online anonymity. While using a VPN is an excellent way of hiding your online footprints, other unexpected factors such as connection breaks (even with a killswitch on) and malware attacks could end up revealing personal information that could be used to identify you.

Some VPNs could result in you being blocked by certain services such as Netflix or BBC iPlayer. Streaming services regularly update their platforms to combat VPN use, so if you’re accessing websites and streaming apps using a shared IP address, a platform update could result in a mass banning a large pool of IP addresses.

To Summarize

Ideally, you should use a VPN on every internet-enable device you use. After all, every connection to the internet is an opportunity for hacking, surveillance, and tracking.
Many VPNs, including all the services that make up our best VPNs list above, offer apps for a variety of devices, including smartphones.
